Science of a Hangover

While many of us don’t understand what causes veisalgia (the scientific term for a hangover) we do recognize that horrible hangover feeling.

Veisalgia occurs when alcohol, more specifically ethanol (EtOH), is metabolized in the body, mostly in the liver. Alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme produced in the liver, is responsible for this breakdown of alcohol to its byproduct acetaldehyde.

Acetaldehyde has toxic effects on our cells. When EtOH metabolizes, in addition to producing the metabolite acetaldehyde, the process also depletes our cells; nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which helps ensure proper cell function; and other essential vitamins, resulting in our cells’ inability to perform their normal cellular function.

These factors are believed to contribute to the not-so-great feeling the next day: also known as a hangover. Some studies suggest that the faster EtOH metabolizes in the body, the less we’ll experience a hangover.

What if there was a way to reduce the effects of a hangover?

Wickham’s Cure is a tonic that provides the body with the essential elements believed to accelerate alcohol metabolism. The all-natural solution replenishes the body with the essential building blocks that were depleted during EtOH metabolism, which are needed for normal cellular function.

Wickham’s Cure tonic takes a threefold approach to help reduce a hangover’s after-effects:

1. The solution contains zinc, an essential component needed to produce alcohol dehydrogenase. Zinc isn’t naturally produced in the body and needs to come from either the foods we eat or supplements. With the higher bioavailability of zinc in Wickham’s Cure, more alcohol dehydrogenase can be protected, resulting in faster metabolism of the EtOH—and reduced hangover effects.

2. NAD+ is an extremely important molecule that plays a key role in many cellular processes. Our bodies do not produce enough NAD+. We obtain the building blocks from dietary sources and then synthesize what’s needed. Wickham’s Cure contains an NAD+ booster. Studies have demonstrated that oral supplementation of NAD+ boosters can increase NAD+ in cells. Since NAD+ is depleted during EtoH metabolism, Wickham’s Cure will replenish some NAD+, enabling cells to theoretically restore their normal cellular function and minimizing the negative after-effects of EtOH consumption.

3. Finally, Wickham’s Cure contains many other essential vitamins and antioxidants, which are considered to be depleted with EtOH metabolism, therefore replenishing your cells with these much-needed vitamins.
